Undiscovered Suns release their Light
Acrylic Painting
Lake Superior Nautical Map
Date
April 2023
This painting title was influence by Detroit Poet, Robert Hayden. I stumbled across a quote from Robert Hayden's, Poem for Ridvan. I felt this painting had a connection based on how the compass rose used on these maps to navigate ships relies on the magnetic sun. The garden of Ridvan means garden of paradise and I find this landscape painting as an imaginary and literally paradise. These topographies release their light in the imaginary vision brought on by what this nautical map represents in Lake Superior. What has been discovered is undiscovered through artistic exploration. This project re-examines an old nautical map of Lake Superior from 1967. This map symbolizes the Lakes as navigable waterways representing commerce. The Lake Superior region is notable for extracting iron ore that is mined, and shipped off to industrial smelters to produce steel. I am distorting these maps as expressions of new imaginative landscapes.
